\"image<\/a>Have you ever wondered how you\u2019re doing financially compared to others?\u00a0 If you\u2019re like me, it\u2019s pretty hard to pass by those articles that show the average earnings of U.S. workers by occupation type.\u00a0 Usually my first thoughts are:<\/p>\n

– Am I doing better than others in my field?<\/p>\n

– Which occupations tend to pay more? \u00a0Which pay less?<\/p>\n

But is salary the best measure of how well you\u2019re doing financially?\u00a0 It certainly is a good, quick measure of how much money you\u2019re taking home at this time in your life, but isn\u2019t what you<\/em> do<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with that money even more important?<\/p>\n

Case in point: Our oldest son recently graduated from college and was fortunate enough to land a real job in the education field. \u00a0After six months or so he complained that some of his other friends were making a higher salary than him. \u00a0So I asked, “What are they doing with it?” \u00a0Hmm. \u00a0That one caught him off guard. \u00a0Turns out tat our son has a tidy (and growing) amount stashed away in savings and even stocks. \u00a0His friends don’t.<\/p>\n

So maybe adding up your savings and investments and the other things you own – your assets – is a better measure of how well you’re doing. \u00a0After all, these are the things you’ve acquired over the years with your salary. \u00a0But don’t forget about the flip side – the debts, or liabilities, associated with some of those assets. \u00a0Things like education loans, car loans, credit card debt, and mortgages should be part of the equation, too.<\/p>\n

In fact, the full equation is: \u00a0ASSETS – LIABILITIES = NET WORTH<\/p>\n

Net worth measures your wealth, and that’s an even better measure of how well you’re doing financially than your salary.<\/p>\n
